First Friday on Roosevelt will be returning this week with hundreds of examples of the artistic talent in Phoenix. Olney Gallery at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral will be opening with painter Alfredo Escarcega’s work, which is heavily based on Surrealism. His influences come from his surroundings—from the barrios of Southern California to the deserts of Arizona, Escarcega’s Technicolor art offers a unique perspective on the world.

If you've ever thought about going back and picking up that old instrument you used to play as a kid, Ari Goldman's book "The Late Starter orchestra" may just give you the inspiration you need to do it.  Goldman, a former new York Times Reporter and Author of the book "The Search For God at Harvard", now teaches Journalism at Columbia, but once upon a time, he was a cellist.  or at least a cello student.  he decides to start playing again, and fins the group of amaeur string players called "The Late Starters Orchestra" that meets every week in an abandoned coat factory in Man
