( Phoenix, AZ ) Jennifer Higdon is the featured contemporary composer on the Phoenix Symphony's 2008-2009 season. This Thursday and Friday (January 8th and 9th) her percussion concerto will be played by the man for whom it was written, Collin Currie. This Concerto was commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. It was premiered in the 2005/6 season by the Philadelphia Orchestra and Christoph Eschenbach in Philadelphia, Washington and at Carnegie Hall. Currie gave the European premiere with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Marin Alsop in December 2007, which was recorded and released in October 2008. Sterling Beeaff spoke with the composer and soloist to learn about a transcontinental collaboration on what has become a very popular new piece of music.
