Transatlantic Immigration Lessons
KJZZ's Tony Ganzer begins an occasional series from Germany as part of the Arthur Burns journalism fellowship, where he'll tell stories that compare immigration issues on each side of the Atlantic. Germany is now coping with the results of a massive guest worker program from the 60s and 70s, which brought Turkish and other minority workers into the country during the "economic miracle." Some of the lessons of that program, may influence current attempts at immigration reform in the U.S. In this first installment, Ganzer tells why one Phoenix man's past experience with immigration issues in Europe influenced his sometimes heated future.

Here & Now: ICE Policy / Dick Mallery
A pilot program aimed at voluntary deportation for undocumented immigrants who've been ordered deported was explained by Eduardo Preciado, Assistant Field Director of Detention and Removal at the Phoenix Office of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Here and Now host Steve Goldstein also spoke with valley attorney Dick Mallery about his efforts to kickstart a bioscience industry in Arizona and his involvement in civic leadership over the years.

Brown Artists Envision Latino Center
A coalition of local artists appears closer to securing a home for a new Latino Cultural Center as talks continue with the City of Phoenix. City leaders says a few properties in the downtown corridor could fit the bill, at least temporarily. As KJZZ's Marcos Najera reports, a temporary center built now could one day become the cornerstone of a future Latino Arts District in downtown Phoenix.

The Small Grocery Store War
As if gas prices weren't high enough, food prices are on their sharpest incline in nearly two decades. Now, there's a new chain of grocery stores in town. The big conglomerate called Tesco - the British equivalent of Wal-mart - has launched a string of stores in the valley called "Fresh and Easy Neighborhood Markets". It's part of a stepped-up effort to scale down grocery stores, and provide shoppers with ready made, "grab and go", dinners. But as KJZZ's Rene Gutel reports, Wal-Mart is about to enter the market to compete.

Extending an Arizona Welcome
It's the busy season for refugee resettlement agencies in the Valley. Phoenix receives its largest influx of refugees in the summer, as the US State Department works to meet its quotas before the fiscal year ends in October. When families arrive, they're set up with the bare minimum of living standards - frequently placed in nearly empty apartments along Phoenix's I-17 corridor. This morning we'll meet one family and an organization trying to give those seeking asylum a warmer welcome to Arizona.

In an effort to make up for the high cost of fuel, US Airways and other airlines are now charging for baggage. US Airways will soon start charging for sodas and juice on flights. Here and Now looked at the airline industry and the direction its headed.
